What are the Benefits of Fasting?

Today is the seventh day of Ramadan and Muslims worldwide are fasting. We abstain from food and water and a few other things from sunrise to sunset. Why do we deprive ourselves? Simply because we believe that our Creator know what is best for us, and therefore, we obey his command to fast in Ramadan. Turns out, several scientific researches show that there are many health benefits to fasting.

Below is a TEDx talk by Dr. Mark Mattson about how fasting benefits our brain. Dr. Mattson is the Chief of the Laboratory of Neurosciences at the National Institute on Aging and a professor of Neuroscience at The Johns Hopkins University. He is one of the foremost researchers in the area of cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Perlukah Reformasi Sekolah Tahfiz?

Jewish Professor Admits All Prophets Were Muslims

Kill All Infidels?

Islamophobes (and their parrots) like to quote the Quran verse 2:191 out of context as prove that Muslims are commanded to kill all infidels. Let’s look at the context, starting with verse 2:190.

Al-Baqarah 2:190
Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you but do not transgress. Indeed. Allah does not like transgressors.

Al-Baqarah 2:191
And kill them wherever you overtake them and expel them from wherever they have expelled you, and fitnah is worse than killing. And do not fight them at al-Masjid al- Haram until they fight you there. But if they fight you, then kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers.

Al-Baqarah 2:192
And if they cease, then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

Al-Baqarah 2:193
Fight them until there is no [more] fitnah and [until] worship is [acknowledged to be] for Allah. But if they cease, then there is to be no aggression except against the oppressors.

If you read verse 2:191 within its context, you will see that it is about self-defense. Muslims are allowed to fight those who attack them, but while doing so, they must not transgress the limits set by Allah. More importantly, when the aggressors cease their attack, Muslims must also cease.

Does Islam Allow a Man to Beat His Wife?

Surah An-Nisa:34

Translation: “Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband’s] absence what Allah would have them guard. But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance – [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them. But if they obey you [once more], seek no means against them. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted and Grand.

This verse is often used to claim that a man is allowed to beat his wife. Needless to say, Islamophobes use this as proof that in Islam, women are subjugated to men.

Nouman Ali Khan explains the terms used in this verse, what they actually mean and the context that the verse is referring to. Please watch this video. I guarantee you it’s enlightening.
