What are the Benefits of Fasting?

Today is the seventh day of Ramadan and Muslims worldwide are fasting. We abstain from food and water and a few other things from sunrise to sunset. Why do we deprive ourselves? Simply because we believe that our Creator know what is best for us, and therefore, we obey his command to fast in Ramadan. Turns out, several scientific researches show that there are many health benefits to fasting.

Below is a TEDx talk by Dr. Mark Mattson about how fasting benefits our brain. Dr. Mattson is the Chief of the Laboratory of Neurosciences at the National Institute on Aging and a professor of Neuroscience at The Johns Hopkins University. He is one of the foremost researchers in the area of cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
